Are we born sinful?

I was reading something earlier that someone had taken a screenshot of. It was a man asking a Pastor why he was sexually abused at ten years old, and if there’s truly a God, why did he stand by and do nothing. The pastor told him that everything happens for a reason and God commands every action. He then went on to say that perhaps it was a punishment for sin, as all humans are born sinful because of Adam, and that’s why Jesus had to come to Earth to save us.

This Blog unfortunately will be quite ‘Bible quote’ heavy, but it’s essential to get my point across about humanity and the accusation of sin.

What is sin?

an immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law.

Sin is any act that goes against the laws of God that could potentially damage your relationship with him. There are major sins that are listed in the Ten Commandments, and there are minor sins like lying, or cursing.

The first issue with sin is the Ten Commandments satisfies God’s ego, but isn’t absolute. It doesn’t cover child abuse, rape, gender equality, racism equality or animal cruelty. Perhaps this is why God did nothing as he doesn’t consider rape to be an immoral act?

The second issue with Sin is the origin of the word, and how it’s been translated into English from Hebrew. In translation the word ‘Chait’ has become ‘sin’ but in Hebrew there’s no word for the act of sin. ‘Chait’ can mean ‘off the mark’, ‘mistake’ or ‘error’. This means that when Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil, they didn’t sin at all, they made a mistake trusting the snake, and considering they were the first humans, God could have gone easier on them.

”Genesis 1.26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.

Genesis 1.27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. ”

So what is God’s image?

Suggesting that man was made in God’s image is to separate mankind from the animal kingdom, but theists claim it isn’t the physicist part. Whilst the physical part is claimed to be important as it’s part of God’s miraculous creation, God’s image is apparently about the inner workings of man.

It is an image that bears the righteousness and holiness of God. When Scripture describes all of God’s attributes, it is in the context of God being the perfection of such attributes. For example, God is love, and God’s love is perfect. Humanity shares many of God’s attributes, and we were originally created to reflect God’s perfect character in righteousness and holiness.Answers in Genesis

So man was created with many of God’s attributes, including love, righteousness and holiness. Were these things instilled into them? Were they created with an understanding of morality already established?

”Genesis 2.7 Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

Genesis 2.8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.

Genesis 2.9 The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. ”

”Genesis 2.16 And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; Genesis 2.17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

”Genesis 2.21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Genesis 2.22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.”

Adam and Eve are stood there naked, unaware that they are naked as their ‘eyes are closed’. They have been instructed not to eat from the Tree of knowledge of good and evil because they will die. Why would God put the tree there in the first place, if it wasn’t for temptation?

”Genesis 3.1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

Genesis 3.2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, Genesis 3.3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ” Genesis 3.4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.

Genesis 3.5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3.6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

Genesis 3.7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.”

Let’s go back to the Answers in Genesis quote again.

For example, God is love, and God’s love is perfect. Humanity shares many of God’s attributes, and we were originally created to reflect God’s perfect character

God’s perfect character. He blatantly lied to Adam and Eve about potential death of the age from the tree. He also put the tree there knowing full well that curiosity is a perfectly normal human attribute. God built man in his own image, but he didn’t want them to learn what was right and wrong by themselves, as he had to obviously be in charge of what’s wrong and right.

Then he gets angry at them all, especially the snake (who is probably being used by Satan to tell them the truth).

‘Genesis 3.14 So the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.

Genesis 3.15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

Genesis 3.16 To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

Genesis 3.17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.

Genesis 3.18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.

Genesis 3.19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Genesis 3.20 Adam named his wife Eve,because she would become the mother of all the living.

Genesis 3.21 The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

Genesis 3.22 And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”

Genesis 3.23 So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.

Genesis 3.24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.”

So, by all accounts, God was pretty pissed off and has some serious anger-management issues. He’s mad at Adam and Eve for trusting the snake, despite the snake being honest, unlike God.

Adam and Eve start a family and it grows over generations and it seems our grumpy God isn’t happy about that either.

Genesis 6.6 The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.

Genesis 6.7 So the LORD said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.”

So in just several pages we can already establish that God is a liar, he’s deceitful, he’s got serious anger management issues, he doesn’t wish for humanity to understand dignity as he got mad when he found out Eve knew she was naked, and despite making man in his image, he wanted to deny them knowledge. And man is sinful??

So to summarise, sin is an immoral act against an immoral God who has an over -inflated ego and suffers from narcissism, and temper tantrums. And people choose to worship him, and claim he loves them?
